Sleep at 4 Months: A Complete Guide

Updated Apr 21, 2026

Medically Reviewed ByDr. Lisa Medalie (Age Hub test)Behavioral Sleep Medicine Specialist

At 4 months, baby sleep enters a new chapter. Wake windows stretch to about 1.5–2 hours, naps begin to organize into a 3–4 nap pattern, and night sleep starts consolidating into longer stretches — often interrupted by the infamous 4-month sleep regression.

Most 4-month-olds need 14–16 hours of total sleep per day, split between 3–4 naps and an 11–12 hour night. Sleep cycles are maturing, which is why some previously good sleepers suddenly start waking more often.

  • Watch wake windows, not the clock.

  • Keep the room dark and cool (68–72°F).

  • Build a short, predictable bedtime routine.
